We often get requests for people to participate in research into depression. This page has been set up to put people who are interested in taking part in research in touch with researchers. If you want to advertise your research on this page, please contact us at trishc@dascot.org. All research must be approved by a reputable organisation and researchers must respect participants' confidentiality. Participants must be able to change their minds at any time.

The effects discrimination towards mental illness can have on accessing treatment

I am a sociology student at The University of Edinburgh, and am conducting research into why individuals may (or may not) delay presenting with symptoms of mental illness, particularly depression, to their General Practitioner (GP), due to the discrimination and stigma placed on mental illness by society.

In order to do this, I am looking to conduct interviews with individuals who have experienced depression, or another mental illness. This will involve partaking in a discussion, with myself, about what your experiences are concerning discrimination and stigma, and whether this may have affected your decision to seek help from your GP.

The interview will last no longer than one hour; and participants will be fully reimbursed for any expenses incurred. Any information provided by participants will remain completely confidential, and participants can be assured of complete anonymity, as any data that may identify participants will not appear in the research, and any data that is not used within the research will be destroyed. Participants are at liberty to terminate their involvement in this research at any point, and for any reason, which does not have to be disclosed.

If you are interested in taking part, please contact me at R.F.Clarke@sms.ed.ac.uk
