Depression, money or health worries, family tensions, loneliness or isolation don't simply vanish because it's Christmas. In fact, these stresses can be worse at this time of year. There are tactics you can use to cope.

  • Write a list of all the things you enjoy about Christmas that don’t involve spending money.
  • Agree with friends or family not to buy each other gifts this year

Difficult relatives

  • Be assertive,
  • minimise time spent with them,
  • look forward to spending time with friends.

Dreading going back to work or recently lost your job

  • Set aside time for some career planning. 
  • What kind of job might you enjoy? Identify steps towards finding that job.

Generally find the festive season difficult?

  • Concentrate on what the season means to you
  • Ignore the social and commercial pressure to celebrate in a certain way.
  • Plan a holiday somewhere hot

Don’t have family close by / feeling lonely or isolated?

  • Can you arrange to meet a friend for a coffee / meal at some point over the festive season?
  • If you’re spending Christmas day alone, can you plan a treat for youself like watching your favourite film with a box of chocolates
