Can a film make you depressed?

There has been controversy surrounding the recently released film ’Avatar’ and the effect it is having on its audience.

According to the Metro newspaper, Internet forums have been filled with fans saying they’ve become depressed after realising their life doesn’t live up to the utopian world of Pandora.

CNN reported one fan site received 1,000 posts titled ‘Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible.’

    I think they are talking about being depressed as in how you would feel if your team lost 6-0 rather than the devastating illness depression. It’s all been overhyped by the media and I don’t believe the film causes anyone to have depression. Here’s a good article about it: http://bit.ly/7M41uS

    I haven’t seen this particular movie, but I’ve experienced other ones making me depressed. One I remember from my childhood was a Dirk Bogarde one set in the Spanish Civil War which had massacre scenes. That disturbed me for a long time afterwards.
    Schindler’s List was another.
    I agree that those complaining about feeling “depressed” don’t actually suffer from depression, unlike myself.
